BE AWARE:-
24/06/19 - Over the last 2 days I have had four phone calls from people claiming to be from Microsoft. They say I have a problem with my computer and that it is downloading files without my knowledge that are being used by hackers and fraudsters, which is leaving my computer compromised at the same time. The first caller had my full name and postal address which could make it seem more genuine. However, these calls are NOT genuine. Microsoft would NOT ring you regarding an issue with your PC. Their aim is to gain access to your computer by getting you to click on a link or visit a certain website. Under no circumstances should you allow anyone who cold calls you to gain access to your PC. 3 calls came from numbers starting 001 and the fourth started 004. The numbers that called me were 0019177171770, 0010890293794, 0018880307551 and 0041526862259. The fourth number is disguised to look more like a local number. If you have had one of these calls and have given them access to your PC and possibly even handed money over to them so they can 'secure' your PC for you, you should report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk. You should also either run an antivirus scan using something other than any software that the caller may have installed or contact your local PC repair shop. Action Fraud can also be found on Facebook (www.facebook.com/actionfraud) and Twitter (twitter.com/actionfrauduk).
Older - Hi all, quick warning - I've just had a call from someone claiming to be calling from Online PC Wizard regarding a refund I'm due relating to a purchase made in 2015. I never made such a purchase and I'm assuming this is a scam where you would need to pay to get the refund. The number they called from was 02122 130730. They were very persistent that I'd made the purchase. After some research this number has been used for the same scam but apparently being from PC World. They apparently need you to the postage for the cheque which you do by putting your card details in to a quite dodgy looking site. I never got that far but others have. If you get this call or similar please be aware and do not give them any money or enter your card details into any site. You will never need to pay to get a refund.
There have been quite a few instances lately of people getting phone calls from someone claiming to be from either Microsoft, Windows, Talktalk or various other companies saying that there are problems with your computer/laptop. They then get you to give them access to your pc "So they can fix the problems". This is a scam as they then ask you to between £150 and £250 to provide you with various bits of software like anti-virus and anti-hacking software. If you refuse they then try to mess things up on your pc to stop you being able to use it. DO NOT GIVE THEM ACCESS AND DO NOT PAY THEM. NO ONE FROM ANY COMPANY CAN TELL IF THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH YOUR PC WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT. If you do give them access either turn off your internet or unplug your router immediately. The best thing to do then is call an genuine computer technician to check the pc to make sure they haven't left anything on your pc which could cause problems.
WARNING:- Please be aware that there have been some instances of TeamViewer (the remote access software some technicians use to take over control of your pc/laptop) users having their accounts hacked. Please make sure that if your pc starts behaving strangely the first thing you should do is disconnect from the internet and then make sure that TeamViewer is not running. If you do experience this please feel free to contact your local PC repair shop for advice.
