I have just had a phone call from a lady claiming to be from TalkTalk (the number that came through on Caller ID was 0151 306 5305). She was saying that there had been some malicious files downloaded through my internet connection. I told her I was a computer technician and that I knew this wasn't the case, but she didn't listen to me and carried on. She then proceeded to talk to me like I new nothing about computers and told me to locate the key with 'CTRL' on and that next to that I would find the Windows key. Again I told her I was a computer technician and that I knew where to find the windows key. She still carried on talking to me like I knew nothing. She got me to open Event Viewer and to open a list of events that, even on a new Windows computer will show errors and warnings, to convince me of these malicious files. At which point I again mentioned that I was a computer technician and didn't need the help. And again, she didn't listen. She then 'transfered' me to a technical support 'expert' to help me fix this. The technical 'expert' spoke to me again about these warnings. I got bored at this point and said that if this issue is with TalkTalk I'll call them directly via the number on the website. At this point he hung up.
Please don't be fooled by anyone claiming to be from an internet service provider who asks you to open a program called Event Viewer. This program by it's very nature, will show errors and warnings. It can look scary but it is usually normal. If they do then carry on and get you to go to a website to allow them access to fix the problem PLEASE SAY NO and hang up.
I have spoken to TalkTalk who confirmed it was a scam call and have since reported this call and number.
